The
first outdoor adventure program offered by YESS was Outpost
001. Activities include sailing, fishing
and wilderness camping. Initially, Outpost 001 served at-risk youth
enrolled in Bridgeport Communities
In Schools, a dropout prevention program.
Outpost 001 was designed to enhance after-school programs and summer
camps. Later, Outpost 001 activities were made available to other
students throughout the year.
Requirements for membership in Outpost
001 include:
- Good school attendance
- Improved academic performance
- Good behavior
- Drug-free lifestyle
- Personal commitment to have fun, work hard
and complete all Outpost 001 program requirements
The Outpost 001 curriculum is designed around
the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s
Boater Education Course and the U.S.
Sailing Basic Keelboat Program. Certified instructors and
experienced sailors volunteer to teach the academics and provide
on-the-water boating experiences.

is Co-Founder and Program Director of Outpost 001. In addition to
providing boats and dock space, Capt. Gene is in charge of classroom
instruction and sailing excursions.
A grant from Rotary International

provided volunteers and special recognition for students who complete
the Outpost 001 program.
