Following a successful 23-year career in Nuclear
Medicine, Dr. Huey Barnett chose to devote his energy and creative
talents to developing positive opportunities for young people in his
community. His first accomplishment was building Bridgeport Communities
In Schools (BCIS), a community-based dropout prevention program. This
highly successful program continues to serve over 3,000 at-risk students
and family members annually in the Clear Creek Independent School
District and Dickinson Independent School Districts.
At the end of his 13th year at the helm of BCIS,
Dr. Barnett decided to develop a unique outdoor adventure program
for at-risk youth. This program, Youth Educational Support Services,
Inc., provided Dr. Barnett with an opportunity to combine his passion
for the outdoors with his desire to enhance the lives of young people.
Dr. Barnett currently serves as President of YESS and provides oversight
of all operations. He also enjoys personally participating in many
program activities.
Capt. Mike Goings serves as Vice President
of Youth Educational Support Services. Capt. Mike is a local businessman
with a long and impressive career as a professional offshore fishing
guide. He also operates a boat delivery service along the Gulf and
East Coasts. Capt. Mike has participated in and won many trophies
in various fishing tournaments, and he is a member of and certified
by IGFA. He has also been a contributing member of the Coastal Conservation
Association.
Capt. Mike is a great asset to YESS. Wherever he goes he spreads
the word about the uniqueness and success of YESS programs. He has
also helped by soliciting donations and in-kind services for the
organization.
Capt. Mike has the most fun when he takes YESS
kids on fishing trips. Kids relate to him and enjoy his stories
and good humor while he teaches them how to catch Red Snapper, Trout,
Flounder and Reds. Capt. Mike helps build life-long memories for
YESS kids.
Joe Skelly serves YESS in the capacity of Secretary/Treasurer.
Joe’s early career pursuits took him to the North Sea when
he worked with a subsea pipeline business. He has also owned a large
printing / office supply business. Joe’s friends know him
best as a warm-hearted man who will “give you the shirt off
his back”. Joe enjoys helping other people who need a friend
or a little help.
Joe and Dr. Huey Barnett, founder and President
of YESS, first met when Huey was beginning to build the Bridgeport
Communities In Schools program. Joe was the first community leader
to make a commitment to help Huey get this new charity started.
That was the beginning of a long and positive friendship for these
two men.
Joe enjoys sailing, fishing and working with YESS kids who always
enjoy hearing him tell stories about his North Sea adventures. Joe
is a community leader who is available and eager to help in any
way that is needed and continues to be a source of encouragement
to all YESS staff.
YESS relies on the wise counsel and support of
a special group of successful community leaders. Many of them provide
in-kind services, volunteer as mentors and participate in various
program activities in addition to providing guidance to the YESS
staff.
Capt. Gene Schwantes worked closely with Dr. Barnett
in the development of YESS. He has made significant contributions
to the success of YESS programs including teaching YESS kids safe
boating practices, how to be competent sailors and by donating sailboats
to the Outpost 001 program. He also serves as Captain of the BaySmart
boats and has designed the proposed purpose-built BaySmart boat.
Capt. Gene has been and continues to be very active
in marine-related activities in and around the Galveston Bay area.
